Capabilities
State-of-the-Art Science. Rooted in Hawaiʻi.
Our lab and platform are built around one standard: every result we deliver must be accurate, locally grounded, and immediately actionable for the people working this land.

Makaliʻi Metrics is building Hawaiʻi's first state-of-the-art soil testing facility. We use advanced analytical equipment designed to run faster, more precisely, and with more local context than anything currently available to island farmers.
Paired with our client-facing platform, we turn raw analytical data into clear, structured reports that support real decisions on the ground.
The Lab
Meet the Equipment.
Each instrument in our lab is selected for precision, reliability, and its fit for the analytical demands of Hawaiian soils. No shortcuts, no approximations.

A high-precision analytical instrument that uses plasma at temperatures exceeding 6,000°C to atomize and excite elements in a sample, then measures the light emitted to identify and quantify ion concentrations.
Measures all major and trace ion concentrations in soil extracts, plant tissue, compost, and water — including P, K, Ca, Mg, and many more. Also detects contaminants such as lead and arsenic in soils, water, and plant tissue.

A compact combustion-based analyzer that simultaneously determines carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur content in solid samples through high-temperature oxidation and selective detection.
Quantifies total carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur in soil, plant tissue, and compost — essential metrics for understanding organic matter content, nutrient cycling, and soil health over time.

A closed-vessel microwave digestion system designed to rapidly and completely break down complex organic matrices — plant tissue, compost, and growing media — using controlled heat and pressure.
Prepares plant, compost, and media samples for nutrient quantification on the ICP-OES by achieving fast, total digestion that open-vessel acid digestion cannot match, ensuring accurate and complete elemental recovery.

A calibrated benchtop meter used to measure two fundamental soil chemistry properties simultaneously from a prepared soil-water slurry.
Measures soil pH (how acidic or alkaline your soil is) and electrical conductivity (EC), which reflects the overall salt concentration in a 1:1 water-to-soil slurry. Both readings are foundational to amendment planning and crop suitability.

A laboratory-grade water purification system that removes virtually all ions, organics, bacteria, and particulates to produce Type 1 ultrapure water — the highest purity standard used in analytical chemistry.
Ensures every extract, reagent, and solution prepared in our lab is mixed with the purest water possible, eliminating contamination that could skew ICP-OES readings or other analyses.

The Dashboard
From Sample to Insight.
Our client dashboard turns lab results into a living record of your soil in an organized, visualized, and ready-to-act-on format.

A secure, dedicated portal where all your reports, historical data, and recommendations live in one place, accessible from any device.
Track how your soil health evolves across seasons. Multi-cycle metric charting gives you a clear picture of progress and areas to watch.
Color-coded optimal, caution, and critical bands calibrated for Hawaiʻi soils and your specific crop type, so status is visible at a glance.
Every report includes written interpretation from our agronomists, not just raw numbers, but actionable guidance grounded in local knowledge.
Intelligent blurbs highlight your main soil concern, immediate next steps, ongoing care priorities, and cultural practice alignment for each report.
Download your full dataset as CSV at any time. Your data is yours, ready for use in your own planning tools or grant documentation.
Our Standard
Quality Is Not a Feature.
It's the Foundation.
Every result we deliver is only as good as the science behind it. We hold ourselves to a standard that reflects the trust farmers and land stewards place in our work.
Methods developed for Hawaiʻi's volcanic soils, not continental baselines.
Rigorous QC protocols and replicate testing on every batch.
We document exactly how we analyze and interpret your samples.
Our methods evolve alongside the latest in soil science research.
